Getting Involved

Supporting rights and power.

Together Turning Tides

If you are a group, organization, or collective that represents or directly serves local communities, small-scale fishers or fish workers, or Indigenous Peoples, reach out to us and share your work and aspirations here. As a global organization, we welcome partners from all around the world!

How we
turn the tide

Turning Tides implements and advocates for liberatory approaches to partnership and grant-making – empowering and centering local communities, small-scale fishers and fish workers, and Indigenous Peoples and their supporting groups. Our practices include multi-year flexible funding, streamlined processes, and comprehensive support beyond the financial contribution.

Turning Tides has five funds

Turning Tides supports partners through five funds. Each fund supports different pathways toward change, and each fund is governed separately in ways appropriate to increase partner responsiveness to expressed needs and opportunities to create change. Currently, we do not have an open call for proposals.

1. Global

The global fund helps ensure the concerns and actions of local communities, small-scale fishers and fish workers, and Indigenous Peoples to be better represented and reflected in global decision-making processes and policies.

The Facility deploys the majority of its resources through its grassroots fund – deployed at regional, national, and local levels.  Grassroots funding strategies are co-developed, aligned with Turning Tides’ Theory of Change, and designed to support on-the-ground efforts and opportunities to move toward tenure security.

Reflecting our  Guiding Principle to rapidly respond to acute needs, this fund addresses urgent needs and strategic opportunities. This could include rapidly mobilizing funds to contribute to safety and security in the face of emergent threats.

We deploy funding to support the self-identified capacity needs of our partners and to, more broadly, protect civic space. Our staff will work in close collaboration with partners to identify needs and craft appropriate responses.

We support diverse knowledge and learning in ways that raise awareness, build accountability, and result in improved practices amongst governments, NGOs, funders, and the private sector.

“Turning Tides works in partnership with a diverse set of philanthropic partners who are also committed to grassroots funding and liberatory approaches”.

If you are a funder keen to see your dollars reach people and actions closer to the ground we welcome your collaboration. As a global regranting facility we maintain direct funding relations with a variety of foundations. Additionally, we partner with philanthropies to bring collaborative support to our grantee partners.
